ALL TOGETHER NOW … PARISHES LEARN ABOUT CHILDREN’S WORK

BLACKBURN Diocesan Board of Education is hosting a Children’s Work Conference for everyone involved in working with children in Church of England parishes across Lancashire. The theme is ‘All Together Now!’ and over the course of the weekend of March 3/4 at Barton Grange Hotel near Preston, delegates will be gathering to explore different ways that everyone can come together as the family of God to worship. One of the keynote speakers will be Elle Bird, who has published a book with the Bible Reading Fellowship on ‘Blended Church’. Drawing on her experience in Children’s Ministry, Elle will be challenging delegates to think about how they can work with people of all ages, so that churches can be truly inter-generational. In addition to Elle, other speakers and workshop leaders include the Jellybeans (a fun and lively Christian band) and Lynn McCann, who is an expert on working with Children and Young People with autism, learning disabilities, and other additional needs. Other workshops include one on how parishes can make a connection with children by having an awareness of how Religious Education is taught in our Anglican primary schools. Delegates will have the option to come just for the day on Saturday March 3 at a cost of £36 per person (including lunch and refreshments) or they can stay overnight to participate in the evening programme and Sunday morning worship at the local church, Barton St Lawrence. The cost for overnight delegates is £106 per person which includes lunch, refreshments throughout the day on Saturday, conference dinner and evening entertainment, and one night’s accommodation (bed and breakfast) at the Barton Grange Hotel, which will be booked on your behalf. Chair of the Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education, The Venerable Michael Everitt, Archdeacon of Lancaster, said today: “This is a fantastic opportunity for parishes to get stuck in and learn new ideas and ways of working in a supportive environment – as well as having some great fun. “Children are central to our Vision 2026 – Healthy Churches Transforming Communities, so it is vital we share current best practice to help parishes engage fully our young people and to share the love of Jesus Christ with them.” Diocesan Director of Education Stephen Whittaker added: “After the success of our 2017 conference, which was oversubscribed, we look forward to welcoming representatives from even more parishes to Barton Grange in March. “The programme is packed with ideas, strategies and advice to help us all in our ministry to young people and their families.” Book early to secure your place!

Meditating with others can offer an immediate and reassuring experience, without the need to judge or define it, of our innate capacity for re-connection (the meaning of religion).

We will use the teachings of The World Community for Christian Meditation based on the ancient Christian tradition of meditation to explore the richness of a simple practical wisdom that brings the truths of faith alive in our own experience.

All welcome: beginners and experienced meditators, of all faith traditions and none. You can just turn up or please contact Revd Ruth Stock if you have any queries.

A service for those who normally avoid church on Mothering Sunday.

The Mother’s Day Runaways service offers a safe space for those who find Mothering Sunday difficult. Whatever your story, whether you’re grieving the loss of a mother, the loss of a child, or a baby through miscarriage, whether you’re struggling with infertility or childlessness, singleness or a difficult relationship, whether you never even knew your mother or any other reason why you might find Mothering Sunday painful, this quiet, reflective service has been designed with you in mind.

Join us at this informal gathering in the Lady Chapel and be guided through an hour-long service. This includes liturgy, poetry, music and stories acknowledging the bittersweet emotions surrounding Mothering Sunday, offering you the space to grieve, enabling us how to lament and inviting the God who loves us into our stories of struggle.

In 2008 the Marriage Measure opened up the possibility of a church wedding to thousands more couples. Building on ground-breaking research, in the last decade churches have discovered more about welcome, warmth and follow-up at every step of the wedding journey with couples. But culture continues to change, and a new generation are making choices about weddings and marriage. How can we engage with couples as they make choices about their wedding day and the life they share together?

This one-day seminar will share fresh insights from new research, helping us to understand more about couples making choices today and over the next decade.

Delegates will:

Explore why, when and how couples make a choice about church weddings Consider how to encourage contact with couples through wedding shows and other media Discover how to create and maintain contact from the first call throughout the engagement Explore the importance of talking marriage, not just weddings Discover practical tools to help with administration and contact Open to everyone who has a role in weddings ministry.

A chance for those involved in Muslim ministry to network and work together Learning from the Global Church about Muslim Evangelism

The Global Connections Muslim World Forum continues to examine issues which are relevant to the work and activities of agencies and churches engaging with Muslims around the world and locally and the Forum meeting on Wednesday 14th March 2018, will look at related issues ...

African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Korean, Chinese and Latin American Christians are engaging with Muslim communities: what can we learn from their methods, approaches and experiences? What about Christians born and raised in Muslim majority contexts? Are their methods adaptable for a UK context? Will their approaches work if applied by missionaries from the UK? What differences are there between working in Muslim majority and Muslim diaspora contexts?

A panel of speakers from different non-Western countries and regions will lead our consideration.

The meeting starts with refreshments (tea and coffee) at 11:30am and finishes at 4:00pm.

The cost is £15 to people from GC member agencies and churches. Cost for non GC members is £45. Drinks are included in the price but please bring your own lunch.

Women & Faith 2018

Abernethy Nethybridge

This weekend break at Abernethy Nethybridge is a refreshing and relaxing time away in early Spring. Women (aged 16+) are all welcome to come and join us for a time of relaxation, teaching, worship, fellowship and fun in the beautiful Cairngorms National Park.

This weekend is a great time for fellowship, making new friends and having some quality “me” time.

Our speaker, Jan Peach, has a long association with Abernethy, having worked in the kitchen and on the Office teams at both Ardeonaig and Nethybridge, and then as the Youth and Schools coordinator at Nethybridge. Jan is married to Matt (ex-Chief Instructor at Nethy) and has two children. She has run (and spoken at) women’s weekends in Northern Ireland, and is passionate about women engaging with all of Scripture and spending time with the One who is most important in our lives. She is also passionate about the local church, the importance of church as family, and youth work and young people coming to know Jesus through camps. Coming from Northern Ireland, Jan is excited to be sharing God’s word on St Patrick’s weekend! Jan is a great communicator and loves teaching from the Bible, and we are really excited to hear all she has to say!

We're thrilled to have Fiona Stewart, the Creative Director of Foolproof Creative Arts with us. Fiona works with the Cairn Movement and leads their Glasgow Centre of Mission.

Who Let The Dads Out? are pleased to offer this training day for church leaders, workers and volunteers (both men and women), interested in this developing area of ministry. The training gets to grips with why and how to engage with men wherever they are on their fatherhood journey.

This training day will explore some of the theology around the role of fathers and father figures, the need for intentional and specific ministry, the social and spiritual benefits and some practical approaches.

The main speakers will be Mark Chester and/or Tony Sharp, usually complimented by a local practitioner of Ministry to Fathers.

Mark Chester is the founder of Who Let The Dads Out? He is a writer and speaker, with a ministry to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. He is married to Su and they have two children, Megan and Billy. They worship together at Hoole Baptist Church in Chester, where Who Let The Dads Out? began. Mark joined the BRF staff team in 2013 to support the growth of the movement.

Tony Sharp is BRF's National Coordinator for the Who Let The Dads Out? ministry and has worked for BRF since 2012. A mechanical engineer by training, he now writes and speaks regularly on the subject of ministry to fathers. Tony is married to Brenda and they have one daughter, Laura. Tony and Brenda also live in Chester and worship at Hoole Baptist Church where Tony runs the Who Let The Dads Out? group.

Join us at Abernethy Ardeonaig, by Loch Tay for a weekend of faith and walking. Develop some mountaincraft skills and enjoy the company of like-minded women to walk the stunning Perthshire countryside. In the evening we will have some worship, with some homebaking and chats by the fire in one of our two cosy lounges.

Why not bring your daughter for this weekend - as long as she can walk a beginner level walk as a minimum, even if she is under 16 then she would be most welcome and we will arrange an age-relevant evening programme for the girls!

We may offer two levels of walk, beginner and more advanced, depending on your previous walking experience and current level of fitness. Although the weekend is intended to be a relaxing break, this is not to say there isn't the option for a longer venture with the potential of topping out on a fantastic Perthshire peak.

Our speaker is Diana Hall, the Rector of St Anne’s Church in Dunbar, East Lothian and an occasional contributor to BBC Religion and Ethics broadcasts. She is passionate about the potential of the local church to be Jesus’ hands and feet at the very centre of community life. A native of Duns in the Scottish Borders, she was formerly a Court of Session litigation solicitor (with a career break as Office Manager at Abernethy Ardeonaig in the middle!) She enjoys wild swimming and good coffee shops, and is kept on her toes by her cat Cuthbert and spaniel Oswald Doglet. She blogs occasionally at www.pausingplace.blog.

On Good Friday 30th March 2018, the renowned Wintershall Players return to the heart of London with their awe-inspiring full-scale re-enactment of The Passion of Jesus, performed for free in the shadow of the National Gallery. The Passion premiered in 1993 on the Wintershall Estate in Surrey and since then has become a highly anticipated Easter fixture, both in Guildford and in Central London.

The story commemorating the day Jesus is believed to have been arrested, tried and crucified by the Romans, two days before miraculously rising from the dead on Easter Sunday, is brought to life by a cast of over a hundred, all in resplendent costumes, along with horses, doves and donkeys.

Featuring realistic scenes and a heart moving crucifixion and resurrection, The Passion of Jesus is an unforgettable Easter experience.

Supported by the Mayor of London, The Passion of Jesus now attracts more than 20,000 people to its two London performances. As well as Trafalgar Square, the Wintershall Players will perform The Passion in Guildford on Easter Saturday.

Director Ashley Herman, and producer Charlotte de Klee, both appeared in the very first Passion production in 1993 as Narrator and Miriam and have been associated with it ever since. The actor and artist James Burke-Dunsmore has performed as Jesus on stage for more than 60 different productions to over a quarter of a million people, and 2018 marks his 21st year performing in the role. The rest of the company is made up of volunteer actors and stage crew from in and around London and the South East.

Once again, those who can’t make it to London for the performances will be able to watch The Passion live, both performances will be shown via a Facebook Live Stream – www.facebook.com/Wintershallplay.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “The Passion of Jesus in Trafalgar Square is an important chance for people to learn more about the story of Easter. Holy Week is a time for Christians to reflect on the life and teachings of Christ. This is also a great opportunity for all Londoners to see this unforgettable performance in an iconic location.”

The Passion’s Christian message embraces all denominations, and this is highlighted by the active and continued support of the Bible Society, as well as two of the country’s principal Church leaders, The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster and the Bishop of London. Please note: This is an open air event so clothing appropriate for the forecasted weather conditions should be worn. This performance contains a realistic interpretation of the crucifixion. Parental guidance is advised. Big screens are used so wherever you are you can see and hear the acting. BSL interpreters will be available for both London performances.
