Children’s charity Home for Good has launched an urgent appeal in response to an unprecedented shortage of homes for children who need them and a desperate need for more foster carers in the UK.

This year in the UK, around 36,000 children and young people will enter the care system. That’s 100 children every day. Each and every child is brimming with potential and deserves a loving, safe and stable home where they can thrive.

The current shortage of carers means that too many children don’t have this. In some cases, children are having to move far away from all they know, and all that is familiar, such as school, because of a lack of carers in their local area. Often, sibling groups are split up because there aren’t enough carers with the skills and space to enable them to stay together.

Each and every child is brimming with potential and deserves a loving, safe and stable home where they can thrive.

CEO of Home for Good, Tania Bright, said: “Foster carers provide children with a safe place to live while their birth family is unable to look after them. This could be for a few nights, months, years, or the duration of their childhood. Thousands more foster carers are urgently needed to meet the growing demand for homes.

“In February 2023, the Government recognised the immense value of foster carers in the lives of children in care and committed to increasing the recruitment and retention of foster carers. Home for Good are committed to supporting the recruitment of new foster carers by raising awareness of the need within UK church communities and journeying with people as they explore opening their homes to a child who needs one.”

The urgent appeal will raise vital funds to support Home for Good’s mission to find a home for every child who needs one and facilitate the recruitment of new foster carers in the coming year. The goal is £20,000 and donations can be made via our JustGiving page. The appeal will be launched on 24 Feb and will run until 17 March and you can get more information on their website here.
