A few years ago when, on a mission trip with Iris Ministries to Italy, my friend and I prayed for a deaf lady. As we prayed, her ears popped open, and in amazement she told us she could hear! We were overawed and rejoiced together. This lady had been totally deaf for twelve years.

Later, I met a man who did not believe that God heals today. He had been fed the wrong theology. It raised a question. What if your sick child or someone you love needed healing and you had been taught that sickness was ordained for him or her to suffer because it would make them a better person? This is a devilish, wicked lie. It needs to be exposed. I believe, like any loving dad, God hates to see his children suffer, which is why he calls himself, ‘I Am, Jehovah Rapha.’ Healing is his idea. Sickness is the devil’s idea. Jesus was beaten at the whipping post and went to the cross so we could be healed. He died just as much for the healing of our bodies as he did for the forgiveness of our sins. The two are inextricably linked as part of the same package.

When Jesus looked at the crowds, he had compassion on them, and he healed them all (Matthew 15:30). He called us to do the same.

Jesus cursed the fig tree, so we can also curse cancer and command it to wither and die

Jesus cursed the fig tree, so we can also curse cancer and command it to wither and die (Mark 11:21). In May 2020, my friend Gail was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in her lower stomach. Her best friend and our prayer group, inspired by Jesus’ example of cursing the fig tree, began to curse the tumour and command it to wither up and die in the name of Jesus.

When the surgeon operated on Gail, he was surprised to find that the skin of her tumour had withered into a thick, dead, prune-like texture, which had prevented the cancer from spreading.

When the surgeon operated on Gail, he was surprised to find that the skin of her tumour had withered into a thick, dead, prune-like texture, which had prevented the cancer from spreading. The medics had never seen anything like it. To investigate further, the tumour was bottled up, labelled and sent around several teaching hospitals in the U.K. and Europe. Doctors were mystified and had no explanation for it. Gail was determined not to keep it quiet and announced to her surgeon it was Jesus who healed her. Whether he believed it or not, her praying Christian friends were hugely encouraged. God is faithful. He is our Healer. We simply thanked and rejoiced and shared the testimony of her miracle with whoever would listen.

An artist called Sally asked me to check out her home for a possible magazine feature. She wanted publicity for her paintings. The previous weekend, I had suffered excruciating pain in my back and was about to find out why. During our initial chat on my arrival, Sally told me she suffered from permanent back pain. ‘I had an operation to put an iron rod next to my spine to keep it straight. At first it helped, but not anymore.’ I twigged. ‘Oh wow. My back has been hurting all weekend. I think I am supposed to pray for you. Would you like me to?’ She nodded. I laid my hand on Sally’s back and spoke to it and commanded it to be healed in Jesus’ name. Then I prayed aloud in tongues.

I asked her how she felt. ‘Weird but warm and nice,’ she replied. ‘As you spoke, I felt intense heat on my back. Now the pain has gone. And, oh wow, I can move my back now. Never done that before. Maybe the iron rod has gone?’ On reflection, we both agreed the rod had supernaturally melted away. We were baffled. Where did it go? We did not care. We could not stop laughing. Sally seemed to know she had been healed and forgiven all in one go because I later learned Sally asked her boyfriend to leave her house. Romans 2:4 came to my mind. The goodness of God leads you to repentance.

A few months later, Sally invited me to pray for her again as she had developed a cancerous lump just above her rib cage. She had a friend named Eliza staying with her. Did that matter? I assured her that it was fine, thinking perhaps Eliza would be impacted too. Sure enough, Eliza stood by in utter amazement as I prayed and the Holy Spirit came and diminished the lump before our eyes as quickly as a balloon releasing air.

All three of us were dumbstruck. An awed silence followed and when we spoke, we all chimed in at once. ‘Wow, God, what was that?’ ‘That was the power of using the name of Jesus,’ I responded, reeling from delight and shock. God, You are so good. I never discovered what happened to Eliza, but as she was a neighbour, I suggested that she and Sally would enjoy attending an Alpha course together. Eliza had a son who was a drug addict. The Lord used his plight to drive her to search for healing for him.
