A few years ago I went shopping, forgetting I had prayed early in the morning for God to take control of my mouth, but God had not forgotten. He had a job for me to do.

As I was leaning over the steering wheel to place the parking ticket on the dashboard, I caught sight of a wizened old woman’s face staring into mine through my car window. She had no teeth and was walking with two sticks, struggling to drag heavy medical boots behind her. She was bent over at a 45-degree angle and could only see by turning her face sideways.

I decided her condition was well beyond my faith level to pray for, so I felt a sense of relief as I started walking to the shop. But as I walked along the narrow pavement, I realised she was shuffling slowly in front of me. I caught up with her and was about to pass her. But overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit’s compassion, it seemed churlish not to say something like ‘Are you okay?’ or ‘Can I help you?’ As I opened my mouth, I heard a loud, authoritative voice call out, ‘Stand up straight in Jesus’ name.’

As I opened my mouth, I heard a loud, authoritative voice call out, ‘Stand up straight in Jesus’ name.’

Shocked, I realised it was my voice. Next, in a flash, she effortlessly shot upright and stood perfectly straight. Her face lit up and she beamed at me, waving her arms in the air and dropping her sticks. I looked at her in utter disbelief, taking a step backwards in shock.

She began to praise God in a foreign language, ‘Jesu,’ she said with a big smile, and I thought, ‘thank God, she is foreign.’ Now I would not be able to speak to her anyway. Shouting above the heads of passers-by, I told her, ‘It is Jesus. Jesus healed you.’ I did a thumbs-up sign. She responded with another enthusiastic wave and beamed, jabbering away in her foreign language.

There was no doubt in my mind that she was thanking Jesus and praising God.

There was no doubt in my mind that she was thanking Jesus and praising God. Still feeling deeply confused, I could not wait to retreat to the normality of the shop. Once through the front door, I began to question the Lord. ‘Was she faking it? Was she really crippled?’

He replied, ‘You just did what I did in the synagogue on the Sabbath for the crippled woman. Remember?’ When I got home, I looked up the passage in Luke 13:10-13 - Now, he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And just then, there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, ‘Woman, you are set free from your ailment.’ When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.

That settled the matter for me. As born-again Christians, you and I have the power to imitate the miracles of Jesus. You will receive what you declare and the Holy Spirit will activate what you ask. You shall declare a thing, and it shall be established, and light shall shine upon your way.
