As the world celebrates Halloween, former occultist Elizabeth Klanga shares how what seemed like harmless fun once opened doors to real darkness and how only Jesus brought her true freedom.

When I was in the occult, Halloween was my favourite time of year. I believed it was the night when the veil between the physical and spiritual realms was at its thinnest. The excitement of the crowds charged the atmosphere, making it easy for spirits to manifest in the natural world.
On that night, we called on spirit guides through tarot, séances, and Ouija boards. As a medium, I would transfigure into Bastet, the ancient Egyptian cat goddess. Every person taking part became a willing vessel for spirits to inhabit. The power felt intoxicating, but it was counterfeit.
My descent into darkness began innocently with a coffee cup reading.
My descent into darkness began innocently with a coffee cup reading. After an emotional breakdown, I found myself at a witch’s table, lost and desperate for guidance. She taught me how to speak with spirit guides and the departed — not realising I was communing with demons. I was convinced I was serving “the light,” unaware it was Lucifer masquerading as light. For fifteen years, I chased more power, more knowledge, more control.

Then one day, while channelling spirits, I tore down an image of Jesus, the same Jesus I once believed was merely an ascended master, and said, “I don’t need You.” Soon after, I heard a voice say, “You are going to meet the devil, and you will have to choose.” Not long after, I awoke to the devil himself, laughing and speaking in a demonic tongue: “I’m coming to collect.” In that moment, I realised the power I thought was mine had always belonged to him — and now he’d come to claim the cost. But God had a rescue plan. He pulled me from the pit of darkness by His amazing grace, opened my eyes to the truth, and brought me to repentance. He called me His little lamb and entrusted me with a new purpose — to reveal the darkness I once walked in and guide others to the true Light, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible warns: “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy” (John 10:10).

Halloween may appear harmless: costumes, decorations, even candy, yet it is rooted in ancient rituals of sacrifice and offerings, concealing a deeper spiritual danger. What looks like ‘just candy’ is used to initiate children into the festival, subtly teaching them to embrace darkness without even realising it.Halloween carries hidden spiritual dangers.
When you fill your home with skeletons, gravestones, and symbols of death, you are unknowingly inviting a spirit of death to take residence there.
When you fill your home with skeletons, gravestones, and symbols of death, you are unknowingly inviting a spirit of death to take residence there. But where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom and life. Evangelist John Ramirez explains that the pumpkin represents the demon Oshun, goddess of the rivers, and placing one at your door invites that spirit into your home. You wouldn’t leave your house keys outside for a thief, so why leave a spiritual key for the enemy who comes to destroy everything in sight? It’s amazing how supermarkets sell pumpkins for £2.50, it sounds cheap, doesn’t it? But the real cost is your soul.

The enemy doesn’t want your money; he wants your soul. Jesus paid the ultimate price for your salvation on the Cross of Calvary, He paid it all! Yet so many still choose to partner with the devil and participate in this despicable holiday. In the spirit realm, your soul is valuable beyond measure, and the devil knows it. God said, “My people perish for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). We live in a generation with a full‑blown identity crisis. If we truly understood our value in Christ, how precious, chosen, and dearly loved we are, we would never bow to cultural pressure or entertain what grieves his heart.
I pray for anyone reading this, especially those trapped in darkness, to be touched by the power of his Holy Spirit and turn from anything that opens doors to the enemy. Your soul is priceless, bought by the blood of Christ himself. No darkness is too deep for his light. As Isaiah 43:1 promises: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine.” That is the truth the devil does not want you to know — you are already loved, chosen, and redeemed by the One who gave his life for you.
