I’ve been contemplating the importance of responsiveness. Jesus honours those who are responsive in Matthew 25:40, reminding us, “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me”. Responding to the hungry, the sick and the stranger is, in essence, a response to God himself.
Lasting friendships, strong faith and good communication all stem from one essential quality: responsiveness. It is key to authentic relationships and shapes our formative years; children who feel listened to become attuned adults. A comforting truth is that God is always present and responsive to us.
Imagine having a conversation that stops halfway through. In our digital age, where much of our communication happens online, it’s easy for simple manners to slip away. But here is also a truth to consider: “No response is a response.”
Responding with kindness, without the intention of trying to change others, reflects the light of Christ. When our views are not respected, we must remember that opinions are not facts, and it is often healthier to detach with love than to force a point.
Through prayer and meditation, we can sense God’s eternal plan, which operates on a different timeline to ours. He may not answer our prayers immediately; many seem unanswered, but he is listening. Life is a dynamic journey, and our faith in God and our growing responsiveness shape our perceptions and our reality. The word ‘discipline’ comes from ‘disciple’, reminding us of our shared growth. Remembering that God’s time is infinite encourages us to approach one another with patience and understanding.
Loving God, we thank you for your guidance.
May your love and support help us grow stronger and release any past hurt.
Loving Father, we seek your help and guidance to cultivate kindness and responsiveness in our thoughts and actions.
In you, we find peace and serenity.
Thank you, God, for your compassion and understanding as we navigate this journey.
With your timeless truth,
you are our guiding light.
O Lord of mercy and forgiveness,
Lead us through the shadows of doubt towards wisdom and compassion.
Merciful God, you forever guide us.
May our lives truthfully reflect your eternal goodness, love and grace.
Now and forever
Amen.
