Season four of The Chosen is about the cost of being a true disciple of Jesus Christ, says Stephanie Pena. Despite a previous Woman Alive writer explaining why she would not watch the series, after going to the premier, Stephanie says you will be ‘moved, touched and transformed in some way’, and we should all go and watch it.

Stephanie Pena at The Chosen season four premier in Leicester Square, London

Standing in Leicester square, surrounded by images of Jesus and his disciples on the large screens, I couldn’t help but smile seeing how God makes the impossible possible. Knowing of this show’s crowd funded, humble beginnings from Director, Dallas Jenkins, it feels like quite a landmark moment for The Chosen as season four premieres in London. Look at what God can do when his holy people get together, with their gifts, and step out in faith to bring the life of Christ to the cinema.

Walking on that grey (not red!) carpet it was anything but grey. The atmosphere was of celebration and joy. The Holy Spirit was undoubtedly moving within the hearts of those there and it was beautiful to see.

I challenge you not to be moved, touched and transformed, in some way, after watching season four.  The Chosen is for everyone, whether you choose to believe in Jesus or not, Jesus’s story brings hope and the light that overcomes darkness.

So, what can you expect from season four? Well, the cost of being a true disciple of Jesus is what is being played out on the big screen. The suffering, the laying down of our lives, forgiving and having the courage to pick up our cross and follow Jesus. Actor Noah James (who plays Andrew) explained to me ‘you see the disciples really struggle with following Jesus. It’s one thing to understand intellectually but another to make it your life, especially when ego/pain is involved’.

Brad Pelo (Executive producer) said that people are drawn to watching the show ‘because they can relate to the characters. The issues that they face at that time, are as relevant as they ever are today. Come expecting story telling at the highest level.’

What I feel the writers Tyler Thompson and Ryan Swanson do so respectfully is keep the story rooted in scripture. The story telling is wonderfully atuned to understanding of our humanity. The elements of humour within the script bring light relief to painful moments in the story. I was crying, then laughing, it is definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. We can empathise with these real moments in our own journey, navigating life as a Christian.

I applaud how producers and writers have made it a priority to demonstrate how important woman are to Jesus’s ministry

I applaud how producers and writers have made it a priority to demonstrate how important woman are to Jesus’ ministry.  Mary Magdalene (Elizabeth Tabish) is seen becoming more confident, finding her place within the group. There is an appreciation for her unique, empathic perspective and the impact of her role as a patient witness.

We see the development of the story of siblings Mary (Catherine Lidstone), Martha (Sophia Blum) and Lazarus (Demetrios Troy).  With these new cast members, that we briefly met last season, we may just encounter a miracle we never thought possible.

Stephanie talking to Jonathan Roumie, (Jesus in The Chosen)

The stories being told completely resonate with what is happening in the world today. As Jonathan Roumie (Jesus) revealed ‘there are going to be a lot of challenges in this new season but it allows us to see Jesus begin to fullfil his mission, it’s the beginning of the end’ as we witness Jesus walk through his grief with immense love and mercy.

I challenge you not to be moved, touched and transformed, in some way, after watching season four.  The Chosen is for everyone, whether you choose to believe in Jesus or not, Jesus’s story brings hope and the light that overcomes darkness.

‘Jesus is the way, the truth and the life’ John 14:6 and the team behind The Chosen have brought the greatest love story ever told to mainstream media for all to see.

By watching season four, you will be supporting the sharing of this Christian story to a world that desperately needs to hear it. If there is one show you watch in the cinema this year, make it this new series of The Chosen.
