In her October editorial, Woman Alive commissioning editor Jemimah Wright reflects on how easily we can forget the ways God has answered our prayers. As she explores stories of faith, courage and God’s faithfulness, she encourages us to remember what he has done – and to share our own testimonies so they can encourage others.
I have just spent an hour talking to Michelle Heritage from Eternal Wall of Answered Prayer, and I came away feeling challenged – and encouraged – to remember what God has done. If you haven’t heard of the Eternal Wall, it is a new landmark currently being built near Birmingham. The 51-metre-high wall will contain one million bricks, with every brick representing a story of Jesus answering prayer! Construction began in November 2025 and the Wall is expected to open in 2028.
Michelle told me that, when it comes to sharing stories of answered prayer, she has found that we English can sometimes be reticent. We don’t want to appear to be boasting. But there is a difference between boasting about ourselves and giving testimony to what God has done.
Recently my sister in law, Julia, reminded me of a testimony in my own life, that I had forgotten. Years ago I needed an exact amount of money for a visa, in dollars. I didn’t have the money. I went to my Bible to pray. I have lots of cards and notes in my Bible - some used like bookmarks, and as I flicked through, to my surpise - there in the pages of my Bible was an $100 bill - just what I needed. I had no explaination of how it got there, it was supernatural provision.
Surely I would never forget that experience, you would think, but I did, and needed my sister in law to remind me. It made me think about how easily we can forget. We pray, God answers, and then life moves on. We might tell a friend or family member, but how often do we stop and deliberately remember? Even the small things – the prayer answered at just the right moment, the provision we didn’t know was coming, the door that opened, the situation that changed, or the quiet sense that God was with us when we desperately needed him.
