Writer Kate Orson reflects on her journey from New Age conspiracy circles to Christian faith in this personal response to the release of the Epstein files.

In 2020 I was a new ager, and a ‘conspiracy theorist’ - exploring rumours of a celebrity paedophile ring, and trying to discern truth from lies. The revelations left me feeling depressed and hopeless, which plunged me deeper into the new age world of psychics and astrologers, craving the false hope they peddled.

Then during one of my internet searches I stumbled upon a testimony from a woman who had seen real demons during a Satanic ritual. Up until that point I’d thought in terms of the ‘universe’ and ‘good energy’ and ‘bad energy.’ I didn’t realise there were actual distinct demonic beings. That got me wondering; if demons are real, then maybe Jesus is too?

After I became a believer God pulled me out of the rabbit holes of endless information.

After I became a believer God pulled me out of the rabbit holes of endless information. He showed me that I would never get to the bottom of things so it was useless trying. I also felt such peace that I just didn’t want to shatter that by learning any more about the evil that goes on in the world.

I began to realise that conspiracy theories can become a form of Gnosticism; the idea that salvation and sanctification come through acquiring secret knowledge. The problem is that in this world of theories there are so many lies mixed with truth that we are ‘always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.’ 2 Timothy 3:7

This truth-seeking mission can make people very prideful, and it’s a distraction from what it really means to be Christian; loving God, and showing that love to our neighbour.

With 3.5 million Epstein files hitting the mainstream some of that conspiracy theory is looking like ‘conspiracy fact.’ With everyone talking about it there is a temptation to go looking and learning as much as we can. At first I told myself I wouldn’t look at the files. But then after a discussion with a friend curiosity got the better of me. I fell down the rabbit hole again, looking and looking, until I finally listened to the Holy Spirit’s nudging to get out. I noticed during the days afterwards that lingering sense of darkness from what I’d read and seen. I reflected on how reading these files had brought me no peace, or knowledge of anything I didn’t already know.

The Bible tells us that man is capable of the most horrific forms of evil imaginable, and there is ‘nothing new under the sun.’

The Bible tells us that man is capable of the most horrific forms of evil imaginable, and there is ‘nothing new under the sun.’ While the world may be waking up to the crimes of Epstein et al, as Christians, if we know our Bibles, we won’t be surprised. The Bible tells us that Satan is the god of this world, and so some of the richest, most powerful people in the world are carrying out horrendous crimes.

It’s good that some truth is coming to light, but let’s not let the information distract us from what’s really important; justice for the victims, prosecution for perpetrators, and ultimately knowing that God will judge all in the end.

There’s nothing to gain for the average Christian from looking at the Epstein files. However, I don’t think we should ignore them completely or bury our heads in the sand. As people feel despair and outrage about what man is capable of, we can ‘be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.’ 1 Peter 3.5.

Seeking truth led me to Christ, so I’m hoping and praying that this moment of revelation will plant the seeds of a great harvest.
