Prayer and reflection
‘New Year, new you.’ It almost sounds like a tongue twister, or perhaps an unachievable and somewhat abstract goal. Who needs that in the coldest and darkest part of the year? Not me. Here’s the thing: when we think of something new, it doesn’t always have to involve extreme cold plunges or drastic changes. New also signifies a gentle rebirth that awakens hope. This month, I intend to embrace each day with an open heart, a deep curiosity and a commitment to growth. Nothing extreme – just a series of nurturing choices and, above all, a daily connection with God that brings me a sense of peace.
The first day of a new year serves as a gentle reminder of the different choices we can make and the dreams we can rediscover. It’s an opportunity for reflection and growth, encouraging us to let go of the past and embrace new possibilities with kindness toward ourselves. Albert Einstein said: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
Time never stops, so why fight it? I’d love to share some life hacks that have truly transformed my life for the better. As obvious as it sounds, prioritising adequate sleep is at the top of my list. It makes such a profound difference to how we perceive reality. Many of us burn the candle at both ends, often at the expense of our rest, and this can take a significant toll on us. Our bodies and minds need sleep to heal, thrive and recharge. Sleep is a gift from God, as Psalm 127:2 says: “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for he grants sleep to those he loves.” This scripture reminds us that striving for success through overwork is ultimately futile if it undermines our faith in God, who restores us with unconditional love.
The second tip is to eat a variety of wholefoods every day. Your body will thank you with radiant skin and increased energy. To complement this, go for long walks with loved ones often. Regular physical activity opens up a natural pathway to relaxation and is also deeply meditative. I’ve recently started outdoor bootcamp sessions; it’s good fun. Also, instead of meeting friends for tea, more and more, I meet friends for walks.
Last, but by no means least, drink plenty of water. Fresh water cleanses like nothing else. Jesus offers “living water” that provides eternal life and satisfies spiritual thirst, as stated in John 4:14: “whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life”. In this exchange between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, the metaphor of water illustrates our deep spiritual longing for connection with God. The “water” he offers is more than just refreshment; it is life itself, an everlasting gift that brings us into a relationship with the divine.
Quench your thirst, and the road to everlasting peace and serenity will be closer. It is by taking simple steps towards good health that the mightiest results are yielded. With that in mind, I wish you a very Happy and Mighty New Year!
God, renew us with your eternal love;
Your love is an ever flowing
river through all of time.
Wash the weary and the angry,
leading them towards peace.
God, grant us the strength to
stand up for our beliefs,
For in the shadow of injustice, your call of
love and forgiveness brings reconciliation.
Where hurt belies happiness, light up our lives so that we may see beyond false
reparations and retaliation.
Where there are broken hearts, may your unending love bring sanctuary and safety.
Divine and heavenly Father,
we thank you for this life.
We breathe love into every passing day.
Lord, we love you and we thank you.
Amen
